Overview

The "one country, two systems" settlement agreed to as part of the handover of Hong Kong from Great Britain to China ensures that the world's most affluent island continues to maintain its own distinct taxation and social insurance regime, with payroll requirements being quite different in Hong Kong to the mainland People's Republic of China. With a youthful population, expanding economy, excellent research and development facilities, and a very attractive cost base, more businesses are seeing operations expand into the region.

There are still payroll requirements to meet, and compliance must be one of the core business responsibilities that must be planned for. While withholding obligations are minimal in Hong Kong, these are replaced by strict reporting requirements. Much employee protection such as sick pay, which in other jurisdictions would be provided by social insurance schemes, falls instead as an employer responsibility and cost. Getting this wrong will cost the business in terms of time, reputation, and penalties. A basic understanding of the rules is essential to allow for effective management of an outsource provider.

Attendees will be able to accurately follow a simple pay calculation and identify all of the key items on a payslip. You will also be able to:

  • Identify all key deadlines
  • Understand the penalty regimes and the consequences of noncompliance
  • Have a detailed understanding of the scope of service you are purchasing from an outsource provider
  • Identify what information you need to pass to the outsource partner and why you have to provide it
